BAYANIHAN – Australia Community Network Inc

Bayanihan Australia Community Network Incorporated is a non-profit community organisation formed by a group of Filipinos and Australians who committed to work together as community partners to benefit local Filipino communities in Australia.

This group of independent individuals and organisations first came together in 2005 to discuss ways of meeting the changing needs of Filipino Australian families in suburban Melbourne and rural Victoria. It soon became apparent that for growth to start, each must take on the responsibility to be an agent of change- by preserving positive Filipino values, embracing our present home with other citizens of this country and by shaping together a shared future in the heart of Australia. The group formed informal partnerships to support one another’s associations; the young from Sunshine worked with older ones in Geelong; skills were shared; we learned to fundraise for projects to help Filipino, Maltese, Vietnamese and Sudanese youth alike. We found ourselves showing potential young leaders a different way of thinking, working with other groups, working with government and relating to the bigger world.

In 2007, the group formalised existing community connections by registering as an Incorporated Association with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Filipinos from Australia, Filipinos from the Philippines and abroad, local and international non- Filipino students with an interest in Filipino culture. Our aim as an organization is to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of Filipino culture, and to promote camaraderie and understanding between ethnic Filipinos and the larger international student body here in Melbourne. Our activities include informal get-togethers for members, participation in MUOSS activities such as the Festival of Nations through performances and the preparation and selling of Filipino food. We hope to promote an expanded membership for the future, and offering lessons in native dance as a forum for encouraging participation in the club.Filipino Students Association

The First Group of Filipinos

The First Group of Filipinos.

The White Australia policy on immigration prior to 1970 allowed a very small trickle of Filipinos to live in Victoria. A small number of Filipino nursing students was also permitted under the Colombo Plan. It was after the state visit of the then Australian Prime Minister, Hon. Gough Whitlam, to the Philippines in 1973 that Filipinos began to come to Australia in great numbers. Filipino tradesmen and their families were the first biggest group to migrate under the newly relaxed policy on immigration. Filipinas in secretarial jobs comprised the next biggest group.
