This group of independent individuals and organisations first came together in 2005 to discuss ways of meeting the changing needs of Filipino Australian families in suburban Melbourne and rural Victoria. It soon became apparent that for growth to start, each must take on the responsibility to be an agent of change- by preserving positive Filipino values, embracing our present home with other citizens of this country and by shaping together a shared future in the heart of Australia. The group formed informal partnerships to support one another’s associations; the young from Sunshine worked with older ones in Geelong; skills were shared; we learned to fundraise for projects to help Filipino, Maltese, Vietnamese and Sudanese youth alike. We found ourselves showing potential young leaders a different way of thinking, working with other groups, working with government and relating to the bigger world.

In 2007, the group formalised existing community connections by registering as an Incorporated Association with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

An Art Exhibition Of New Paintings By Christina Hayes Exploring Familial Stories From The Philippines

Inspired by the life of her Filipino grandmother, Esther De Veza Alindato Edwards and a recent trip to the Philippines, artist Christina Hayes has joined forces with sister Esther Marie Hayes, an up-and-coming costume designer, (Rockabye, MTC 2009) to create a theatrical show of paintings exploring tragedy, lost love, and the catastrophic power of nature.

Live Filipino music and folk dances at the opening
Pandanggo Sa Ilaw (the Candle Dance) and Tinikling (the Bamboo Dance) will be performed live at the exhibition opening at Bus Projects. The dances, performed by The Filipino Silayan Dance Academy, require grace, balance and great poise to avoid injury (think rhythmically pounding Bamboo stalks and hot wax), and should not to be missed. And, like all good Barrio Fiestas, there will be plenty of beer and Lumpia (Filipino spring rolls).

Opening Tuesday, 3 November, during the Philippine season of Remembering the Dead. The exhibition and opening celebrations will reflect the tenuous balance of lives, lived and lost, amidst rising flood waters.

This is the third major show where Christina Hayes has collaborated with artists from other disciplines (including actors, costume designers and production designers) to create works that reflect a cross pollination of storytelling methods with painting. Last year, she worked with actress Sarah Mainwaring from Back to Back Theatre to tell the story of Saint Christina in The Astonishing at TCB art inc in Chinatown. In 2007, Christina worked with ten production designers for the acclaimed collaborative show Inhouse at Platform Artist Group.

Opening Night 6-8pm, 3 November, 2009
Until 20 November, 2009

At Bus Gallery, Level 1, 117 Little Lonsdale Street Melbourne

Can you help Maria in her research project

“My name is Maria Tolentino. I am currently doing research on Fil-Aussie migration during the Marcos regime in fulfillment of my MA in Political Economy in the Philippines. Although it is true that the common notion of Filipino migration is driven by greater economic needs that the country is unable to provide, I would like to believe that there are those who went/want to go out of the country because of political reasons- such as the declaration of Martial Law causing the significant emigration of Filipinos. There have been literature supporting and suggesting this type of movement as well, which inspires me more to pursue this field of study. I am in the process of data-gathering, and with this I would like to speak to as much Fil-Aussie migrants as I can who fall under this category of Filipino immigrants. Please contact me at mvatolentino@yahoo.com. Your response will be greatly appreciated and will be guaranteed confidentiality. Thank you very much. God bless”

Thank you so much again.
God bless.

Fil-Oz Social Golf club started in 1992 when a group of Filipino golfers headed by Roland Santos managed to bind together one Sunday afternoon after a round of golf at Riverwood (now Georges River) Golf Club in Henry Lawson Drive, Georges Hall.

Initially, the officers were Don Lopez (President), Chris Bacucang (Treasurer), Roland Santos (Secretary), Doc Torrevillas (PRO) and Gaddee Soriano (Captain). Original members were Alex Setosta, Benny de Guzman, Pong Mendoza, Benjie Franco, Art Stabarbara, Jun Mendoza, Ted Ramos, Rene Apacionado and (E and OE).

In June 1996 Fil-Oz took the initiative of organizing the first Philippine Independence golf cup at Dunheved Golf club. In June 1999 the name of the tournament was changed to Kalayaan Cup through the instigation of then Consul General Ariel Abadilla. In June 2002, Philippine Airlines started donating airfares to Manila for the champion and for raffle. Hence, the naming right was given to PAL and it was changed to PAL Kalayaan Cup golf tournament, now on its 13th year. Supporters of this tournament include golfers from Thai Social golf club, Samoan & Fiji golf clubs, golfers from other Asean consulates and the Filipino-Australian community.
